Step 1: Preparation
Begin by washing your hands (use unscented/mild soap), and dry your hands with a clean towel before touching your eyes, this reduces the amount of water that gets on the lenses as well as prevents germs and debris from getting into the contact lenses. Then proceed to remove the contact lenses from its case.
Step 2: Putting in the contact lenses
Stand in front of a well-lit mirror, place the lens on the tip of your finger and check to make sure the lens is not “inside out” - the lens should have a “U” or “hemispherical” shape and not a “V” shape. Also, check for damage (tear or debris) - If the lens is damaged, change it for one that is in working condition or if dirty, use fresh solution to wash it.
Next, starting with your right eye, hold your upper eyelid back using your free index finger and with your middle finger carefully pull down your lower eyelid. This is to prevent you from blinking or touching the lens.
Then, place the lens gently over the iris and look upwards as you place it on your eye, make sure that all edges of the lens are in contact with your eye. Blink, to further settle the lens in place and to check to see if your vision is clear. Easy?, Repeat the same steps on the other eye.
Step 3: Removing the contact lenses
Wash, dry your hands and fill your contact lens case with fresh solution (this step can be skipped for daily contact lenses).
Now, starting with your right eye, lower your head slightly and pull your lower eyelid down with your middle finger, then use your forefinger to slide the lens down to the lower white part of your eye.
Carefully pinch out the lens with your thumb and index finger and remove the lens from your eye. Repeat the same steps for your left eye.
Tips
After going through all these steps, if the contact lens irritates your eyes after wearing it, remove it immediately and check to ensure it is not inside out or damaged and in case your eye is dry and you find it difficult to remove the lenses, using rewetting drops can alleviate the dry eyes and make it easier to remove the lens from your eye.
Now with the steps presented, relax, be patient and get to mastering wearing and removing your contact lenses.
