Polarized sunglasses were first made by Edwin H. Land, who also invented the polarizing material that can be applied to the sunglass lenses, thus converting the lens and the sunglasses to polarized.

The polarizing material is a mixture of microscopic crystals and other sulfate-based chemical substances embedded in a very thin, film-like, transparent nitrocellulose material. Polarized (polarized) lenses only let through vertically oriented light beams. Therefore, it filters out blinding light reflected from water, ground, and various surfaces and material boundaries, thus protecting our eyes from eye fatigue and extreme light condition changes. As a result, it provides a much more contrasted and pleasant visual experience compared to traditional lenses.
