Polarized sunglasses were first created by Edwin H. Land, who also invented the polarizing material that can be applied to sunglass lenses, transforming them into polarized lenses and sunglasses.
The polarizing material is a very thin, film-like, transparent nitrocellulose material embedded with microscopic crystals and sulfate-based other chemical substances. The lens equipped with polarized material (polarized lens) only allows vertically oriented light beams to pass through. In other words, it filters out glaring light reflected from water, the ground, and various surfaces, protecting our eyes from eye strain and extreme changes in light conditions. As a result, it provides a much more contrasted and pleasant visual experience compared to traditional lenses.
